What Even Was 2020?

Ok, I know it’s not over yet, but what even was 2020?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on it. Contrary to popular opinion, 2020 wasn’t actually horrific for me. I know that a lot of people were negatively impacted by Covid-19 to varying degrees and I’m definitely not shitting all over their experiences, but I can’t say that I’m personally hateful towards this year. I still just can’t wrap my head around everything that happened and how quickly it has flown by!

Quick update on what’s happened in the p4k sphere this year:

I (along with a large percentage of the company) was made redundant from my full time day job on April Fool’s Day. Yep. That happened. It wasn’t a joke.

Ad and I moved to Sutherland which, initially, was a Covid-19 hotspot. There were cars lined up for blocks trying to get into the drive through testing centre. It’s a great place to live though. Leafy with seemingly friendly people (except one set of neighbours who are proper shites).

I became slightly obsessed with having a balcony garden and now I can barely find room to move outside. 100% ok with this though.

We’ve been playing a lot more D&D and I started to DM a couple of campaigns too. I seriously wish I’d gotten into playing D&D earlier. There’s a lot to learn but it’s so much fun so it’s worth the brain drain.

And finally, I started freelancing as a copywriter full time and it’s the BEST decision I’ve made in a long time. I get to help people tell their stories, grow their businesses and make their lives easier with the power of words. I couldn’t be happier.

So, 2020 has brought a hell of a lot of change and some uncertainty, for sure, but I’ve been glad to be able to take the time to reassess my career and my life and start doing more of the things I love. Having a valid excuse to go full introvert has been super refreshing too. I won’t lie, 2020 really showed up for some of us. I will say though that we have been very lucky in Australia to not have been affected by Covid-19 illness and deaths as severely as many other countries. For that, I am grateful. I think if we had been in the same boat as the UK or the USA, I’d be telling a much different story.

Anywho, I’ll let you get back to your 2020. If you want to share your highs and/or lows from 2020 in the comments, feel free to do so. I’d love to hear your experience.

  1. Congrats on becoming a full-time freelance copywriter!! That’s huge!! My 2020 had me graduating from college, getting a freelance design job with the promise of a full-time offer in April, the shutdown and subsequent ghosting from said job, and then starting a new campaign coordinator job in October lol.

    1. Thank you! I’m still finding my feet but it feels great to be doing something I love every day. Awesome! Congrats on your graduation and subsequent campaign coordinator job! Sucks about the shutdown/ghosting of the freelance design job but it sounds like you came out on top regardless. Well done! 🙂
